How this check decides
This check encodes the same criteria as our complete migration guide — including the reasons to wait. The single biggest structural change in any NPSP → NPC migration is the move from the Household account model to Person Accounts; that drives most of the data-mapping work, which is why data quality weighs so heavily here.
The complete walkthrough — data mapping, the step-by-step process, and the common pitfalls — is in NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud Migration: A Complete Guide.
FAQ
NPSP vs Nonprofit Cloud, answered
Should I migrate from NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud?
Migrate sooner if you're launching a new Salesforce org, your NPSP instance is heavily customized and hard to maintain, or you need NPC-native program and case management. Wait if NPSP runs smoothly, your team lacks capacity, or you depend on AppExchange apps that don't yet support NPC. The check above scores exactly these criteria.
What's the difference between NPSP and NPC?
NPSP is a managed package built on top of standard Salesforce using custom objects and the Household account model. Nonprofit Cloud (2023) is fully native — standard objects, the Person Account model, and native integration with Data Cloud and Flow. Salesforce's new nonprofit features are concentrated on NPC.
Is NPSP being discontinued?
No — NPSP continues to be supported, and Salesforce has not announced an end-of-life date. What has changed is where investment goes: new features and AI capabilities are landing in Nonprofit Cloud. That makes migration a when-and-how question for most orgs, not an emergency.
How long does an NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud migration take?
A small, clean implementation can take a few weeks; a large, heavily customized org with multiple integrations can take several months. Data cleaning and testing consistently take longer than expected — budget for them explicitly.
Can NPSP be converted to NPC in place?
Usually not — most organizations migrate to a new NPC org rather than converting in place, because the underlying architecture differs fundamentally. Plan a clean build with migrated data, and treat the migration as the ideal moment for data hygiene.
What's the hardest part of the migration?
The account model conversion: NPSP's Households become Person Accounts in NPC, which requires careful relationship mapping and drives most of the data work. Second hardest: AppExchange apps and payment processors that don't yet support NPC — verify every critical one before committing.
